The light is on the land
NE Sculpture
Minneapolis, MN
August - September 2024
The light is on the land was a collaborative exhibition by Jennifer Nevitt and Galilee Peaches. The work is informed by a series of walks taken in 2020-21 in the regional grasslands and plains of Minnesota. While walking, Nevitt returned to the observations at the heart of her practice: noticing how color makes space and light creates form. The exhibition considers how being in a landscape changes us and explores the figure’s relationship to the ground. Nevitt extends the visual concept of the ‘figure/ground’ relationship (the identification and accurate depiction of the subject’s location within its background) to embody the emotional dynamic between an individual and their landscape, throughout history and into the future. In this exhibition, Nevitt and Peaches created a landscape with wooden structures, layered drawings, and dyed and painted paper. The exhibition was a space to witness how light and the figure illuminate and cast shadows on the land.
